Open-to-Buy and Retail Inventory Management Consulting
I have worked with golf and apparel retailers on establishing an open-to-buy budgeting plan for clients. Step 1 is the establishment of sales plans by department/class. After agreement that this is a realistic plan, the numbers are applied against my proprietary formulas. These formulas calculate planned inventory levels for each month into the future. The OTB calculation, then, is the amount of inventory needed to be purchased for delivery each month to meet the sales and inventory objectives.
Each month, I provide clients with analyses in the following formats:
1. Performance against plan.
2. Contributions of sales, profits and inventory to the total shop.
3. Current margin analysis.
4. 2-year trend analysis of critical retail statistics for each department/class.
5. Suggested actions to correct problems or to maximize successes.
Results to Expect
1. A 10-15% decrease in inventory investment.
2. Improved cash flow through the reduction of inventory.
3. Improved cash flow by allowing sales revenue, rather than investment, to purchase new inventory.
4. A 5-8 percentage point increase in gross profit margins. In other words, a shop that is currently maintaining profit margins of 35% can expect to increase those numbers 40-43%.
